Etica Battery’s ECO-06 racks have achieved the first-ever UL 1973 certification for immersion-cooled storage. This milestone validates compliance with North American safety standards and sets the foundation for UL 9540A testing, advancing safer, more reliable energy storage for commercial and utility applications.

Milestone Certification for BESS Safety

Etica Battery Inc. announced today that it has received the UL 1973 Certificate of Compliance from CSA Group for its ECO-06 Series lithium-ion battery racks. This achievement marks the first-of-its-kind milestone as it is the first UL 1973 certification ever issued for immersion-cooled battery technology. The certification strengthens EticaAG’s commercialization efforts in North America, where the joint venture between Asset Genie and Etica Battery is preparing large-scale deployments.

“This certification demonstrates that our immersion-cooled ECO-06 racks comply with the most rigorous North American safety requirements for stationary energy storage,” said Gavin Wang, Chairman of Etica Battery. “It shows that immersion technology can stand alongside established approaches while offering a new path to meet the highest standards for safety and reliability.”

Covering the ECO-06 rack series, which scales from smaller commercial units to large utility-grade systems, the certification confirms compliance with stringent North American requirements for design, performance, and system reliability. It also affirms that the technology is ready for deployment in commercial, industrial, and utility applications.

“Achieving UL 1973 is proof that our immersion-cooled systems are setting a new bar for safety and performance,” said Jaime Hidalgo, CEO and Co-Founder of EticaAG. “This recognition validates the work of our teams across the U.S. and Taiwan and positions us to move forward with UL 9540A, the next critical step for fire-safety validation.”

What is UL 1973 and Why It Matters

UL 1973 is the North American safety standard for stationary energy storage systems, ensuring that products meet requirements for safe operation under both normal and fault conditions. Without UL 1973 certification, battery systems cannot be broadly deployed in North America.

By securing this certification, Etica Battery demonstrates that immersion-cooled systems can meet the same benchmarks as traditional air- and liquid-plate cooled systems, while offering a fundamentally safer and more reliable approach.

Paving the Way for UL 9540A

With UL 1973 complete, EticaAG is preparing for the industry’s first UL 9540A thermal runaway fire-propagation evaluation of an immersion-cooled battery energy storage system.

“UL 9540A is the gold-standard test for showing how a battery behaves under extreme conditions,” explained Matthew Ward, President of EticaAG. “AHJ’s, fire marshals, and code officials rely on this data to make decisions under NFPA 855 and the International Fire Code. By entering UL 9540A with immersion technology, we are showing regulators and customers that energy storage can be trusted in the most sensitive environments.”

Cooling Matters – Why Immersion is Different

While UL 1973 validates overall system safety, thermal management remains the defining factor in long-term reliability and fire prevention.

  • Air Cooling: Used in older systems, but airflow is uneven, creating hot spots that increase degradation and safety risks.

  • Liquid Plate Cooling: An improvement but limited to surface contact. Cells can still overheat internally and propagate fire.

“Thermal control is central to both safety and financial performance,” Ward added. “Immersion cooling doesn’t just prevent fires, it keeps batteries operating within their design parameters, extending life and improving the economics of storage.”
